COASTAL

When designing a home in a seaside community it is important to make sure that the elements inside are in agreement with your surroundings. In terms of color palettes for a coastal home blues and whites are a good place to start, but feel free to incorporate other colors and textures in as well. For instance, we like to offset crisp white and deep navy with softer natural elements like rope and bleached wood to give the space some texture.

Another coastal design trend becoming popular is a more monotone color scheme of white and beige. The trick to adding interest to a space with a neutral color scheme is to really utilize textures. Grasscloth wallpaper, sisal rug, or washed linen throw pillows will create depth and energize the taupe and white of the space.

CITY

Designing a client’s home in the city gives you an opportunity to use luxurious materials and colors. Play up the modern glamor of your surroundings with rich fabrics like velvet and satin. You could also use lacquer paint to update white walls and create a dramatic new energy.

Be adventurous with the color palette. Incorporate some deep purples and reds where you see fit, and feel free to select artwork that is bright and interesting. Black can also be a chic way to give your decor some drama and edge, but use it sparingly so as not to make the home feel weighted down. Capitalize on the natural sunlight that the space gets, and stick to simple, statement light fixtures that compliment the space without detracting from the view.

MOUNTAINS

The mountains are full of rich texture, so be sure to utilize that when designing a winter get away. Bring elements that you would find outside inside with leather chairs, wooden or metal furniture pieces and animal prints.

Another important aspect of designing mountain homes is that the decor should feel comfortable and warm. Faux fur details and soft throw blankets will warm up the space and make it feel welcoming. Framing larger windows with drapes is another trick for creating a cozy atmosphere.
