MAXIMIZING YOUR SPACE FOR SUMMER

Summer is coming to a close, and on Nantucket that means houseguests. As we reflect on the onslaught of relatives and friends that came to stay, it is easy to look around and wonder how we can better accommodate  everyone and everything next year.

We have learned that the best way to maximize your space is to bake it into your design plan from the beginning. Here are some tips to help you maximize the space in your home.

1. BUILT IN SHELVING AND STORAGE

Get the most out of your space by incorporating some built in cubbies, shelves or storage benches throughout your home. Using built ins in lieu of clunky cabinets creates a more cohesive look, giving you the storage space you need without compromising on design. Built in storage and shelving let you store your things conveniently in a way that adds to the sleek design of your space, rather than distracting from it.

2. CONSOLE TABLES

Console tables are another item that can be just as much style as function. Perfect for a dining or living area, a sleek and simple console table that compliments the colors and textures of the room can really tie a space together. It also provides a space to stash items you need handy but don’t necessarily want displayed.

3. BUNK BEDS

Bunk beds built into the walls and designed to fit seamlessly in the space are ideal sleeping havens for guests. Design details like shiplap paneling and custom features give these beds a luxurious feel, and swapping twin beds out for queens wherever possible is a good way to make your adult guests more comfortable.

If you’re not a fan of bunks a way to accommodate your guests without sacrificing design is to have queen beds with trundle beds underneath. You can tuck them away out of sight until your guests arrive.

4. LAUNDRY ROOM

One of the keys to maximizing your space is to pay attention to the details, because that is what makes all the difference. The laundry room may not be the most exciting room design wise, but the layout and features will make all the difference for day-to-day life.

The first thing to consider when developing the laundry room layout is to make sure there is plenty of room to move around. It is also important to consider what you will want to have in the room and build the room around those essentials. Custom built in drawers for hampers are helpful, as well as a large work sink along with storage space for the detergents and cleaning supplies.

While planning your home keep in mind the rooms function and purposes. Observe how you live and want to live during the early stages of the project so that all will be accounted for once construction is finished. The best way to maximize each room is to create your home around your needs from the beginning. That way you can make your home work for you complimenting your lifestyle.
