Working between Boston and Nantucket has given us the opportunity to become better versed in the construction and design of both seasonal and permanent year round homes, and (what should be) prioritizing in each for their different styles of living. The needs on the island for a few months every summer are much different than those of a family in Boston or the suburbs all year, and we work to build a design that best suits those demands. That is why we like to focus on the specific features of the home in order to take advantage of what each type of space has to offer.

Seasonal homes are only occupied for two or three months out of the year, so the first thing to remember is that it is important to maximize the time spent there. One way to do that is incorporate furniture that suits what the homeowner is interested in on vacation. If they like to have guests get creative with sleeping quarters. If they prefer to host game nights and large dinner parties choose furniture that reflects that. Seasonal homes can be designed around recreational activities, whereas permanent homes should be designed around the everyday routines of the residents. In permanent homes we focus more on creating a mudroom that organizes everyone’s school bags, or a kitchen that could double as a place to do homework.

The type of home it is also dictates the color palette of the design. Nantucket interior decor is typically light, bright and airy, whereas homes in Boston or Wellsley have a more cozy and warm feel. It is also nice to maximize the natural light in summer residences with sheer drapery and softer, more lightweight window treatments. In winter homes we prefer to bring in lots of texture and chunky fabrics to make the space feel cozy and warm during the colder seasons.

When all the considerations are taken into the design and decor the home lives and works for the client allowing the comfort desired with the convenience of having all the necessities no matter the lifestyle.
